Before James Holden was a member of the crew of The Rocinante, he was a lieutenant in Earth’s navy on board the UNN Zheng Fei. When their ship met an unidentified belter cargo vessel suspected of OPA ties, Holden faced a choice that would come to define his time in the navy.

Allt som har med Expanse känns som en god idé att slänga sig över, här får vi alltså en bit till i pusslet som är James Holden. Vi får följa hans tid ombord UNN Zheng Fei och bakgrunden till att han fick lämna marinen. Vi följer med en något yngre Holden, hur han är kring sina kollegor, hur han hanterar situationer med sina överordnade och tja händelsen som ledde till att han så småningom mönstrade på the Cant.

Det här var tyvärr en riktigt besvikelse. En väldigt kort berättelse som helt ärligt inte ger oss någon direkt ny insikt i vem James Holden är. Vad vi ser är faktiskt samma karaktär, det är samma gamla (eller i detta fall yngre) Holden som har svårt för auktoriteter och hamnar givetvis i onåd pga. sina handlingar (även om i detta fall så hade han “rätt”). Inget nytt under solen, eller tja stjärnorna.

Teckningarna är definitivt inte heller i min smak, om jag skall vara brutalt ärlig, de är rätt oinspirerande, på tok för enkla och med en avsaknad av detaljer så blir de inte särskilt minnesvärda.

Antar att jag bara kan rekommenderar The Expanse Origins #1 till dig som är en die-hard fan av allt Expanse och inte vill missa det minsta lilla om den världen.

gbWell, this was a letdown.
A (very) shot story that don’t really give us any new info about Holden.
I was looking forward to some insight in his life before Rocinante and his time in the navy. But all we got was the same old (or in this case younger) Holden, him not taking things serious (despite the fact that he’s on a military ship), and of course he’s total lack of respect towards authority och chain of command. So no new insights there.
To top that off, to be honest the art was also a bit of a letdown, it has a “simple” feel in style and the lack off details makes it a bit uninspiring.
No, sad to say, but this was not my cup of tea.

Tre på tre 2014: SF tegelstenar

Sådär, dags att ta tag i sitt höstläsande (snart i alla fall) och i och med det så passar det att även kasta sig över årets Tre-på-tre utmaning, som kan hittas hos Pocketlover.

Utmaningen går ut på att välja ett tema och läsa tre böcker under tre månader, med start nu i september. Temat skulle kunna vara att välja en trilogi, eller varför inte tre böcker i samma genre, kanske tre böcker av kvinnliga författare eller varför helt enkelt tre böcker som har omslag av en flicka under vatten…
Valen är oändliga.

Förra året valde jag 1 författare, 3 genrer och alla 1a delen i en serie, valet föll på Ann Aguirre och hennes Enclave (Dystopisk ungdomsbok), Grimspace (Science fiction), Blue Diablo (Urban fantasy). I år så har det varit lite värre med vad jag skall välja, behöver något som toppar förra året som resulterade i några riktigt bra böcker. Tankarna gick först åt hållet att kanske inte göra det så svårt för sig, kanske läsa någon trilogi inom young adult genren, hade ett par, tre olika serier att välja på, men ingen av valen kändes helt, tja, rätt. Även om att välja tre YA böcker är rätt enkelt, så nja, nä, i slutändan lutar jag nog på att välja böcker som är lite mer av en utmaning.

Jag var lite inne på “Flickan under ytan” temat förra året, men det tema dammades av nu under sommaren, då jag som bekant läste ett gäng böcker med omslag som hade just detta tema. Så jaha, där gick det bort, dags att tänka om.

So here it is! Varför välja något lätt när man kan välja TEGELSTENAR!

Då tegelstenar i min värld är lite i gränslandet till att vara ett helt tema, så har jag förfinat det lite. Det blir förutom tyngden i sidantalet SCIENCE FICTION i tre olika varianter, en typisk space opera, en speculative fiction/first contact och en hybrid SF/Urban Fantasy/Steampunk variant. Har haft ett gäng lite tyngre böcker som lääääänge samlar damm på min att-läsa-hyllan, tänkte att en utmaning kanske kan får mig att äntligen läsa dem.

Welcome to the jungle

First one out of my November reading is Jim Butchers graphic take on the Dresden files. Don’t know why I haven’t come around to read any of his books, it strange for they should be right up my alley. So when I found the graphic adaptation, Welcome to the jungle in the bookshop the other day, well let’s have a go at that, all I can say now, I’m hooked.

For all of you that’s not familiar with the Dresden Files, it is set in a world similar to our own, regular folk close their eyes or look the other way when things goes bump in the night, they try to rationalize when the supernatural world crashes with what is considered normal. Here we meet Harry Dresden, professional wizard, a police consultant and private investigator.

Welcome to the JunglThis story begins with the brutal killings of a man at the Lincoln Park Zoo, Harry gets a call from lieutenant Murphy of the Special Investigations asking him to have a look at the scene and when he gets there he senses that there is more to this killing then just an ordinary animal attack. During his search for clues that might lead him and the police in the right direction of who or what killed the man, he starts to realize that he might be next in line.

There is a pace and urgency in the way Butcher is telling his story, the reader gets drawn into this world filled with magic, demons and things that seems ordinary on the surface but is far, far from it. The illustration is stunning; colors are deep and rich, a bit more to the dark palette, but oh so beautiful. Ardian Syaf has done an excellent job, I’m looking forward to see more of his work.

My thoughts after reading this novel go to works like Dave McKean’s Black Orchid or Frank Miller’s innovative take on Batman in late 80s. And Jim Butcher actually mentions Frank Miller in his introduction, as an example when comics became graphic novels. In the introduction he also states that this is his view of his characters, especially Harry is spot on to how he imagine him in his own head. So page after page, we see the authors vision of some of his characters from the books.

I enjoyed this graphic novel immensely! It was fun, filled with humor and action, the story is engaging and interesting and as I mention above the illustrations are stunning.  I just fell in love with this edgy, worn down (anti) hero that is Harry Dresden. I can recommend this to all of you out there who like a good urban fantasy story, and off course to all Harry Dresden fans (if you missed this one), this is a new story set in time just before the novel  Storm Front.

I strongly recommend, read it!!
