I min jakt på nya förmågor hittade jag BLACK SCIENCE: How to fall forever från Image Comics, Image brukar hålla hög kvalitet på sina serier så en ny science fiction serie kan inte bli fel, eller?
Anarchist scientist Grant McKay has done the impossible! Using the Pillar, he has punched a hole through the barriers between dimensions, allowing travel to all possible universes. But now Grant and his team are trapped in the folds of infinity, the Pillar sending them careening through a million universes of unimaginable adventure, sanity-flaying danger and no way home…
Första delen av denna volym är lite som ett klassiskt Stargate avsnitt, ny värld och nya utmaningar, hopp! ny värld och nya utmaningar, fast i detta fall handlar det om olika dimensioner. Grant McKay, hans barn och några medarbetare hamnar lite ur askan i elden varje gång de “hoppar” mellan dessa olika dimensioner. Den första delen är mest action och som läsare får man några få återblickar, men det är inte förrän andra halvan som Rick Remender ger oss lite bakgrund till varför denna märkliga blandning av människor befinner sig där de är. Den andra halvan är också lite åt det filosofiska hållet, här presenteras lite mer om teorierna bakom dessa dimensioner, vad som kan ske på grund av dessa hopp mellan dimensioner .
Jag har lite svårt att bestämma mig för vad jag tycker om BLACK SCIENCE som helhet, om man bryter ner de olika delarna så är det genomgående att de flesta världar befolkas av märkliga aliens, ja då förutom den andra världen de kommer till som är en andra världskriget variant med tyskar som slåss mot högteknologiska amerikanska indianer med laservapen och robotar. Högst märkligt, besynnerligt och på sätt och vis rätt intressant antar jag.
Dock så har jag stora problem med karaktärerna som presenteras, de är tyvärr rätt endimensionella och jag har svårt att tycka om någon av dem, antingen är de rena idioter eller så får de inte tillräckligt med utrymme för att jag som läsare skall känna något. Vår huvudroll Grant, är rent ut sagt en riktigt douchebag, ett par av hans medarbetare dödas av rätt snabbt, hans barn är mest irriterande och den ”onde” företags representant och hans sidekick är rätt ointressanta. Här önskar jag att författaren gett karaktärerna tid att utvecklas, att jag som läsare på något sätt får en möjlighet att ”knyta an”.
Den vetenskapliga teorin som presenteras är dock intressant, hela tanken på ett multiuniversum, att det är som att skala en lök, med lager på lager är intressant och även om det tar ett tag, nästan halvvägs in, så får vi genom flashbacks information om hur, varför och en aning om vad dessa hopp mellan världar kan föra med sig.
Bilderna och tecknarstilen då, färgläggningen är helt fantastisk, färgrik men åt de mörka tonerna, men bitvis är rutorna visuellt slående, åtminstone när det kommer till att skildra de udda och bisarra alien världarna. Annars så är tecknarstilen i sig tyvärr lite åt det kantiga slaget och det är inte riktigt my cup of tea.
Jag känner mig lite ambivalent över denna serie, när det finns så underbara serier i sf-genren exempelvis SAGA, som är bland det bästa som produceras i serieväg just nu, så blir detta lite futtigt. BLACK SCIENCE förlitar sig nästan uteslutande på action och tyvärr så missar den det som i mitt tycke gör SAGA så briljant, att presentera och utveckla sina karaktärer så att jag som läsare känner och kan förstå de som befolkar universumet.
BLACK SCIENCE är egentligen inte dålig, själva idén om multiuniversum är intressant och trots att karaktärerna är rätt platta så kan den nog räcka till att jag plockar upp nästa volym. Det var ju faktiskt en riktigt rejäl cliffhanger i slutet och ibland kanske man få ge en bok en extra chans.

This been on my TBR list for a couple of month, just waiting for me to get around and read it. This was one of those buy last year when I wanted something new and sort of picked up a random book. I thought a new (for me) science fiction series from Image Comics, well that can’t go wrong, right?
The answer is yes and no, BLACK SCIENCE isn’t bad but not all that great either. As a reader you are thrown into the story, we see an alien world and a man and a women that are chased by strange creatures. The story continues like a classic Stargate episode, a new world and new adventures, jump, a new world and new adventures, but in this case it’s different dimensions. Grant McKay, his children and some co-workers jumps from one dangerous word to another. The first half of the story are more about action than giving the reader some background story, there are a few flashbacks but mostly its violence and a bit gore. It’s not until the second half that Rick Remender gives us some background to why such a strange mix of people are where they are. This part is also a bit more philosophical, with some theories behind the dimensions and we are presented to an idea that maybe there will be severe consequences from all those “jumps”.
I feel a bit ambivalent what to think of BLACK SCIENCE as a whole, if you look at the different parts there is the strange aliens and their worlds, but then we have one that could be earth, but during what looks like WWII with Germans fighting native Americans that are armed with laser weapons and have sophisticated robots to their disposal. It is strange, bizarre and strangely interesting. But then there is the issue with our main characters, unfortunate I felt they were a bit one dimensional, and to be honest I didn’t like not one of them, they are either just plain idiot or just left there without trying to give us some feeling or emotion, well to be exact just leaves us with nothing. Our main character Grant is a total douchebag, some of his co-workers get killed rather quick, his children were mostly annoying and the corporate guy and his side-kick, well I just felt them quite uninteresting. I wish the author would give the character some time to evolve, so that I as a reader can feel for them, for better or worse.
The graphics and drawing then, well the coloring is fantastic, although a bit dark at times, but some of the alien worlds are visually stunning. Unfortunately this is a rather hard and square drawing style and that is usual not my cup of tea.
I’m not sure what to think, when you have series like the amazing and wonderful SAGA, that I think is one of the best graphic novel that are produced right now, well then this feels a bit small. BLACK SCIENCE is all about action, and in my opinion it misses the mark, what makes SAGA such a brilliant story, to introduce and evolve the characters properly, that makes me as a reader feel and understand the character and why the act in a certain way. I don’t mind a lot of action and a bit gore, but I want a bit more to it, more substance.
BLACK SCIENCE aren’t that bad, the idea with some sort of multiverse are interesting and even if the character are rather flat I think it will be enough for me to pick up at least one more volume. And the ending had a big cliff hanger, sometimes one just have to give a book an extra chance, so I suppose that I will fall a bit more with this story.
